Nationwide Strike: Austerity Nature Of Life In Nigeria

Nigeria Labour Congress, has called for nationwide strike and also advised citizens to get essentials of life stocked at home ahead of the commencement of its seven-day strike protest against austere state of life in Nigeria. The first executive taken by the Federal Government was removal of fuel subsidy, since the inception life has become unbearable for Nigerians, from high fuel price to high cost of living, prices of groceries and transportation have skyrocketed to an unimaginable level, workers can no longer transport themselves to work place, it has really taken a deep toll on the citizens, the aforementioned strike is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, August 2, 2023.

This is story of poor masses in Nigeria, the system was designed to hurt them economically and otherwise, families could barely eat, private employers are reducing the number of employees because they have to contain with the cost, and this add number to already existing high unemployment rate. There is big gap between the rich and poor in Nigeria, and this cycle has continued to recycle over time, things are not getting better, losing of hope and unfilled dreams. Government are always reckless in making policies, majority of their policies are antagonistic to welfare of the citizens, proposed rolling out N8,000 palliatives to families to cushion effect of the austere situation was unthinkable.

Nigeria is longing and still clamouring for crop of leaders who are going to drive the nation forward, Nigeria needs all round growth to contain with ever growing population, and the governments are just not meeting up with the demands of the majority, and it keeps dragging the country into the mud.

This austere situation in the country has carved out the trend “let the poor breathe” which was made by the senate president in effort to reduce harsh policies and its effect on the citizens. The situation is becoming hopeless with little or nothing to aim for. While plan for nationwide strike still subsist according to NLC, they are legally banned from embarking on strike, the ruling of National Industrial Court is still effective subject to appellate options, anything contrary to that will amount to contempt of the court. Dialogue among the parties continue to go on, and that could divert the planned nationwide strike, if progressive steps are made.

Ahmed Fintiri, Governor of Adamawa State, has imposed 24-hour curfew after, “hoodlums” broke into warehouse carted away with foodstuffs and other valuables. It was an action he justified against further attacks on people and businesses. This underscores the current state of life in Nigeria, hungry citizens are taking the laws into their own hands, it can only pave for anarchy and continuous rise of recidivists across the nation, this is a situation that can metamorphose to higher crimes in the society, and this is the effect of poor leadership.
