EPISODE 6

“Ijeoma, are you stupid? I thought you are wise! Ekene shouted.

“These rich people are all intimidating, besides I was rude to him in the first place”, Ijeoma answered.

“And you thought the best thing to do was to leave that job. You just have two days left to get paid. Aunty Anuri will be disappointed if she heard this. She allowed you to stand in for her so that you can get something for your going back to school”, Ekene reminded.

“You won’t understand Ekene, I was rude to him the first day I met him at Anuta restaurant, his mother is so strict. I mean they are powerful rich people. That woman speak highly of his son…”

“Ijeoma, why are you speaking like a child. Your explanations is  irrelevant. What this woman promised to pay you just for a week is half of your school fees and you abandoned it after working for five days because you met her son. Wait, are you not telling me something?

“Ekene, I will explain to Aunty Anuri. I can’t stay there anymore”.

“That is your business Ijeoma, the clock is ticking. I can see you don’t want to go back to school”, Ekene said.

Ijeoma shrugged.

“Son, you called me. I thought you’ve gone to sleep? Ma Gladys asked while sitting down.

“Not yet, Mother”, Collins replied.

“What keeps the lion awake then? she asked smiling.

“I found her”. I found the one my heart skips for, Collins said, softly.

“Wow!!, Ma Gladys shouted.

Where? how? When?

“I was surprised Mother, I went to pick a file from the house.  Princess told me the cleaner kept it elsewhere while cleaning the sitting room. I went to ask the cleaner for it. Lo, she is the one. I don’t even know how to feel. Few hours ago, I was searching for her all over the place. I feel like I am dreaming!

Ma Gladys burst into laughter.

“My boy is truly in love! This is really beautiful. Mom will be very happy to hear this. Is she the new cleaner?

“I was with Mom when the cleaner asked for her permission to go and take care of her sick mother in the village. She promised to bring  somebody to stand in for her. I guess she is the one.

“This is divine, Son. Hope you spoke with her?

“She was reluctant to tell me much about her,

but I know where she lives now. Mom interrupted our discussion and I had to leave. I will tell her about it some other time”, Collins said smiling.

“I’m glad you found her after twenty seven years of searching” Ma Gladys said and they burst into laughter.

“Son, tell me more about this girl”.

Collins gradually lower his coffee cup, as his face beamed with smiles. Ma Gladys watch him, she knew this mysterious girl has won. She listened attentively as Collins begin to speak.

“I don’t like you”, Ijeoma snapped.

Collins was taken aback. He found it ridiculous that despite the fact that some women make advances to him, this particular one is different.

“Why?

“You are all deceivers, cheats, and ungrateful. You all said the same thing but does different things. I have learnt to mind my business”.

“Ije…oma”, Collins called, moving closer to her but she eyed him and step back. The way he called her set her heart pounding, she knew she had not been called that way before but she refused to be  persuaded.

“Please give me a chance to prove myself, I love you so much.

“I said no!, my chances are all exhausted. I think you should go, Ijeoma said.

“Ijeoma! Akunne called from inside.

“Yes Mother”, Ijeoma answered.

“I hope you’ve given your visitor a seat? “, she shouted. Meanwhile, Collins has been standing since he arrived.

“You see, you can go now”, Ijeoma said pointing at the gate.

He didn’t speak a word nor moved, but kept looking at her.

“Did you say that Collins came here? Anuri asked in disbelief.

Anuri was the daughter of Akunne’s childhood friend.

“Yes”, Ijeoma answered.

“He said he loves me and I should give him a chance to prove his love for me”.

“God!, so this is how you work”, Anuri exclaimed, looking up to the sky.

“I don’t understand, Aunty Anuri”.

“Ijeoma, Collins is every lady’s dream. Now, I’m not just talking about his wealth. He is humble to the core and responsible. How did he find you?

“I met him at the restaurant few months ago and he was seriously looking at me. He came over the house to pick some files and met me in the kitchen. I was surprised he remembers me. He…

Anuri interrupts her.

“Ijeoma you are a lucky girl, his type is rare. Hope you accepted him?

“Aunty Anuri, not too soon. I’m not in the mood to love again”.

“Do you know the number of girls that comes to the house to see him but he don’t even pay attention to them. You are very beautiful and well behaved Ijeoma and you deserve better. I believe Collins is yours that is why it didn’t work out with Ken and others. He will give you the peace you need. I have worked with them for five years now”.

“I will think about it Aunty Anuri”, Ijeoma said.

“Did you know you have put me into trouble, Anuri chided.

“How?

“You left the house before the contract ended, Ijeoma. How will I explain it to Madam now”, Anuri asked.

Ijeoma kept quiet, thinking of what to say.
