Mmeso Inspires: A U-turn

“You are late? the receptionist asked, wide-eyed.

“The tra…ffic was ba..d”, I stammered.

I could hear the beating of my heart. Hot sweat trickled down my armpits. It was funny because the office was well-ventilated.

I fumbled for my handkerchief. “Ooh…I thought. I forgot it in the house.

“I said…what did you intend to do? the receptionist asked, quietly.

I realized she was talking to me.

“How? I will go to my office and resume work now” I said, wiping the sweat off my brow.

She point at my dress. I looked down. One of my button was missing revealing my cleavage in generous proportion. I bit my lips in pain.

“Young lady, this is really bad. This is your first day at work and you are two hours late. It is a turn off”, she said.

“It is beyond my control”, I said, flabbergasted.

“You woke up from the wrong side of the bed today because the Director is around. He arrived and requested to see the new employee for an Interview. He barely come except when there is a board meeting… I interrupted her.

“You mean he will get me fired because of this, I mean I passed the interview”, I said.

“The MD is a grouchy fellow and he doesn’t joke with cases like that. Last month, he fired three workers for a similar case, though they were on probation anyway “.

“I will go and meet him nevertheless”, I said my heart beating faster.

Just then, a lady stormed out weeping. A young man followed behind, mumbling to himself.

“Edna, why are you crying”, the receptionist asked bewildered.

“He fired me! she said and burst into tears.

My heart dissolved into my stomach.

“Oh goodness! Not this time. I have searched for work for years, I thought”.

“Why? The receptionist prompted.

The lady ignored the question and quietly walk away with her accomplice, probably.

“Serves them right”, the receptionist snapped.

I was shocked.

“That is bad! You shouldn’t be happy with other people’s misfortunes”, I said.

Honestly, she is beginning to get on my nerves.

“Oh! do you know how many times they have been caught fumbling in the office. Come on, the office is not a bedroom” she said.

I ignored her.

“I think you should be going”, she said.

“Why?  I will see him first, then if I perish, I perish”, I snapped.

“I love your faith but you have to sit here and wait until he is free before I let you in”, she said.

I wanted to argue but on a second thought, I wave it off.

Just then a beautiful lady came out from the office and walked up to her.

“Miss Cassandra, the director want to know if he is expecting someone?

I think the lady is the most beautiful being I have ever behold with a beautiful tiny voice.

“Yes please”, I quickly answered before the receptionist could say anything.

She gestured at me to lead the way.

I did. As we walked through the hallway, I was marveled at the beauty of the building. We walked past some office before she stopped at a door, knocked and asked me to enter.

It has on the door a beautiful inscription “MD”

————————————————————————-

“Good day Sir, I greeted.

He did not respond or look up. He was busy with his laptop. Engrossed with whatsoever he was doing. A young man who is in his late twenties.

“Good day Sir, I greeted again.

“Who are you and what can I do for you? he asked, ignoring my greeting and neither looking up.

“What a character! he is worst than described”, I thought.

“I’m the new employee, Sir”, I answered. My voice trembling.

“Goodness! The same lady that was two hours late on her first day of work. You are fired! This company cannot tolerate such lackadaisical attitude from workers, he said without looking up.

“Please Sir, it was an event beyond my control”, it will never happen, I pleaded. I struggled to hold back my tears.

“There is no second chance, Miss he said, finally looking up.

He paused as his strict demeanor relaxed to a friendly surprise.

He scrutinized me from head to toe, probably wondering why I was putting on a gown.

There was some minutes of silence.

“Your name? he asked trying to fake a frown.

“Olivia Johnson”, I answered.

“You can go to your office and commence work, he said, smiling.

I ran out of the office happily.

Two days later, I received a mail from the company.

I have been transferred to the Main branch of the company.

Where the director could see me, eye to eye.

I have always been punctual and good with the work too.

What do he really want?
