Mmeso Inspires: A Failed Plan

I am a queen, the prettiest in the village.

Whatever I want, I get it.

Young men fight for my love and Young ladies hate me…, they said to themselves “Her sight is intimidating”.

I am a flower, which can never fade at dusk.

You can call me the beauty goddess because I deserve it.

Yes, I am a paragon.

You see, I have been pinning away gradually and I cannot explain why so much pain for a beauty like me.

It’s Okwudiri, the village warrior.

I am the sunshine of Alaoma village, the panacea to my father’s illness.

Everyone always turn to catch glimpse of me again each time I passed by, both men and women inclusive.

But I wonder why Okwudiri is not moved by my sight.

Is he a spirit that he cannot talk to me? Or

Is he a blind man that he cannot behold such a graceful sight?

It’s been a while since I have my eye on him but he seems to have his eye on someone else.

I am Olaedo, the village paragon, and I cannot be defeated.

Ten times, I had won the village beauty contest

Who will compete with me?

Okwudiri has his eye on Nneka, the large eyed outcast.

But I have my eye on him, and I shall get him.

Because no one dare touch the tail of a lion even while asleep.

I am Olaedo, and my beauty is incomparable.

Insomnia had seized my soul, as I hatch my plans

Because I am girl who knows what she wants.

Yes, I am girl who goes for the best.

Okwudiri is the one I need and not the Prince with bangles and chains on his hand or the Chief with potbelly and flabby cheeks.

Okwudiri is the man I want to marry and not the man who speaks through his nose or the Chief who has twenty barns and numerous cattle.

Yes, Ezedu had completed his roof with corrugated iron sheets and he has promised me that which goes on four wheels if I say yes to his proposal… but I rejected him outrightly.

He cried like a baby but I was not moved

Yes, Okwudiri is all I want and I shall get him.

The gong sound louder and I strained my ear to hear.

It was a cool morning and the weather was friendly.

Otigba’s voice was clear…. “Okwudiri the village warrior has eloped with his outcast lover”.

It dawned on me that my plans has failed.

Mother always tell me “My daughter, most times in life, you don’t always get what you want”.

I never believed her, because my beauty is my weapon but right now…. I can see clearly, the truth.

Hate filled my heart…

Anger engulfed my soul…

But greater is the pain that besieged my soul when Anuri, the olive- skinned daughter of the village’s watchman was declared the prettiest in Alaoma kingdom.
