CRISIS

Both Sides Of A Smile: Tigray And Ukraine

Whether what is happening in Tigray and Ukraine is a tale of two different coins and the world’s preference towards particular people. The unequal approach is very clear, nearly two years Tigray has been under siege by Ethiopian forces, forcing humanitarian crisis in the northernmost part of the country, and the world pays less attention to it, since the invasion of Ukraine by Russia-led Putin, all hands has been on the deck to inflict major economic crisis on Kremlin to stop assaults on Ukraine sovereignty. While the war in Ukraine seems too delicate and come with bigger risk, Tigray deserves more attention than the one they are getting by United Nations, it is woeful to talk about the role of African Union because they lack stronghold and could barely stand on any structured policy.

World Health Organization chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has observed that the world is not treating the human race the same way and has vehemently said that world treats crises differently depending on race. This is the both sides of a coin and the situation going on Tigray where the world care less about the crisis ravaging them and where all the attention is turn to Ukraine to defend their territory against Putin, and the high presence of NATO involvement has made the war contested, the invasion of Ukraine looks more like the war between the west and Putin than assault to Ukrainian people, where Ukraine is turning to battleground for resolution, Russia has threatened nuclear deployment if Sweden and Finland join NATO.

The world hugely divided in the opinions and treatments of black and white lives, Tedros still maintained that humanitarian crises are not being given equal consideration, possibly because those suffering are not white, referring to the horror going on Tigray. He puts it forward and questioned whether “the world really gives equal attention to black and white lives”, with reference to the crises going on in Ethiopia, Yemen, Syria and Afghanistan gained only a fraction of attention of the global concern in Ukraine. According to Tedros “I need to be blunt and honest that the world is not treating the human race the same way”, he further stressed that “some are more equal than others. And when I say this, it pains me, because I see it. Very difficult to accept but it’s happening.” Tedros noted that “nowhere on earth where the health of millions of people is more under threats” than Ethiopia’s Tigray region.

The issue of equality has expressed across the system it is so clear that you could barely turn away from it, especially when you’re affected, Tedros is from Tigray and he is wearing his heart on his sleeve. And UN humanitarian aid is slow in reaching out to Tigray people dying of starvation due to the war. While it enters more than 50 days on Ukraine territory assault, they are seeking for support to fight for and protect their people, president Biden has described the situation as “genocide” having previously called president Putin “a war criminal”. The world could be witnessing worst humanitarian crisis.
