Christmas is a huge ceremony in Christendom. It is almost seem like a global cerebration with the excitement surrounding it when it approaches. Christmas in Africa comes with lots of pleasure notwithstanding the other circumstances surrounding it.
Christmas is the celebration and remembrance that a saviour of the world came to this world and took form of human, in order to save humanity and give them everlasting salvation. His birthday is very sacrosanct and worth every bit of the celebration, but Christmas in Africa take a different form.
December is very special to many, the time of the year that the atmosphere is filled with love, certainly the best part of the year, the time that put an end to the struggle throughout the year and give it a rest, with gathering of loved ones which make it more memorable and sharing their various encounters throughout the year.
Christmas in Africa is very natural, it is mostly spent in rural areas. The place that give many people their true identity, traveling from the urban to rural areas are norms which guide Christmas in Africa and people are glad to meet their grandparents especially children who don’t have the liberty to express themselves in terms of socialization.
Christmas is in the air, children can perceive it anytime it is around the corner. They become very excited, because they know Christmas will be graced with presents from parents and many relations who come from a distance place to celebrate with family.
It will be incomplete without fireworks, teenagers use the money they get from uncles as Christmas tips to buy fireworks, because they know that their parents will never approve of them buying fireworks looking at the danger part of it, but the teenagers will always see it as an excitement which comes once in a year.
Lower class family admonish their children not to spend those money on anything, any tips they get from their uncles, they will rush and give it to their mother, they have made to believe that the money will be spend on their education the following year; new school bags and other necessities needed to get back to school. The fact is that the money is meant to sustain them, sometimes these children are sent to rich people homes in form carols but with the intention to get money from them.
Foodstuffs will rise in price, which is very normal during Christmas in Africa, despite that people never cease to buy all the foodstuff needed for Christmas celebration, they came very prepared. Traveling to villages come with merriment, there is no dull moment with the big uncles and village programs which sums it up, the football tournament and masquerade were big event to reckon.
