President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia, rejected a proposal to buy cars worth $1.8 million for his entourage, after he won an election in August 2021. His arguments were “Are you using public money to buy a Toyota V8 for the mayor? That V8 for the mayor can put toilets in all your markets in your constituency. Think along those lines, you cannot afford V8, so why do you want to pretend because you are using taxpayers’ money?” President Hichilema is conscious enough to assert that government officials ought to drive good cars but not necessarily V8.
