What Has Sanctions Got To Do With The War?

Sanctions have been heavily levelled against Russia oligarchs who are alleged to have been in close ties with president Putin. It is crackdown using by Nato and its allies to make sure Putin pay for invasion of Ukraine. It is also a tool to frustrate the war, once those people are no longer financially stable to stand behind him and pushing for the war, he will definitely loss his inner circle and there could be no resources to keep the war going, that’s the brainchild behind sanctions imposed by Nato members to Russian billionaires who maintain close affiliation with Vladimir Putin.

Who are Russia oligarchs?

Russian billionaires who maintain stand on the invasion of Ukraine have been sanctioned and assets frozen by the west. The UK has announced sanctions against Chelsea’s owner, Roman Abramovich and other oligarchs, as part of the strategy to penalize Russia for invading Ukraine, which they are have been accused of committing war crimes. Russia oligarchs are those whose business empires and connections are closely associated with Kremlin. The UK has stepped up in sanctioning:

  • Oleg Deripaska has stakes in En+ Group
  • Andrey Kostin is Chairman of VTB bank
  • Igor Sechin is the Chief Executive of Rosneft
  • Alexei Miller is CEO of energy company Gazprom
  • Nikolai Tokarev is president of the Russia state-owned pipeline company Transneft
  • Dmitri Lebedev is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bank Rossiya
  • Roman Abramovich owner of Chelsea FC and has stakes in steel giant Evraz and Norilsk Nickel

With time the world will get to see how these sanctions will be able to impact Russia invasion, while president Putin has hitting back and threatened to stop exporting oil and gas to some European nations who depend on Russia for oil and gas if the wave of sanctions continues.
