Twitter Ban: A Tip Of Disregard To Human Right In Nigeria

The ban on micro-blogging site, Twitter came to effect after President Muhammadu Buhari tweet was taken down, as it deemed to violate policy guiding the social media. Twitter ban, came as shock to Nigerians as they share different views in regard to the ban, not concurring with the government ban on the social media company.

The rationale for twitter ban, as determined by the FG, on the ground that it undermines the cooperate existence of Nigeria, that was the principal claim that led to the ban. In other words, the ancillary claims relied on menace of terrorist sect; Boko Haram insurgency in the northern part of the country. And for allowing the leader of IPOB [ the Indigenous People OF Biafra] to incite havoc using their platform and the campaign against SARS, which the government show the desire to investigate twitter involvement.

Nigeria over a couple of years, has shown zero regard to human right and existence of freedom of expression. Twitter ban by the government is undermining democracy, if you are not ready to be criticized you should stay away from people’s government, they determine what happen in the system, but it is totally different in Nigeria, as they continue to practice undemocratic democracy; tyranny in disguise.

Nigeria in distress

If twitter is seen by the government as a medium used to disregard the cooperate existence of the country, it could be also used to enhance development, unemployment, good governance and unite the country. When you limit the freedom of expression in the name of twitter ban, and people’s involvement in the government of their country, it is a hostile attitude towards human right. The world is actually watching high disregard of human right that is going on in the country, and former president of US, Donald Trump opinion on the foregoing issue is belittling, it is degradation of humanity, nothing can quantify a situation where humanity is stripped off what form the majority and their little quota to the government.
