Public Universities Shutdown, Race For Top Job Ignited And What Makes Of Nigeria’s Younger Generation

Coming out from what looks like a hell for many Nigerians under series of regime that has failed to get it right, it is now a question of where the country is heading as an entity and the future of younger generation in such setting that has killed dreamers and snatched their dreams away from them. Public universities have been on industrial action since February, 2022, in Nigeria and talks have failed to yield any fruit to get students back to learning, it is always end in “deadlock” and it has become one of the major pressing issues which the government has failed to address, and often the government has showed disdain for education for having kept students out of school in such timing that Nigeria is almost at its collapse.

The quality of education has failed to improve, and it is at moribund state, youths in Nigeria see nothing to lose when they failed to train themselves up to tertiary level, because they feel like they will be better of learning artisanry than spending more time at home and getting the universities shutdown in the disguise of going for higher learning. It has now become a dividing factor for Nigeria’s younger generation, the system has totally failed the expectation and the country is in serious disarray, it is now a borderline between decayed system and what makes of dream of younger generation.

Agreement was reached in 2009 over the striking action by ASUU/FGN and failure to honour the core agreements reached have been the reason for reoccurring of industrial actions to press the demands, and the union feel that the only way to get federal government listen to them is through shutting down the universities. Memoranda of Action, the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding, and the 2020 Memorandum of Action all these were the agreement to have the universities running, federal government has derailed on the payment citing paucity of funds, while ASUU maintain their ground in honouring the agreements.

The race for top office in the country- presidency, is very much alive, having seen the amount political parties and aspirants spent in contesting for positions. Contrasting it with myriad of problems of facing Nigeria, the bottom line is that, there is untold story about the cause of hardship and mismanagement in the country’s economy, a government that prioritized fight against corruption as its main goal, under their watch accountant-general stole more than 80billion. And this is the irony of what the government has claimed to be, and the populace become the victims of the circumstances. It is about Nigeria political oligarchs feeding on the flesh of its country’s serfs, still they are not satisfied.

The line has been drawn, the populace needs mentality revival, the problem is largely on followership, political sycophants are going to explore every opportunity to keep people’s minds away from seeing the bigger picture. It is going to be a defining moment for the country to move away from system which has trapped all the sectors and render it fruitless, the dreams and aspirations of young people cannot coexist with the current system in place in Nigeria, until there is total upheaval politically, religiously, mentality and down to tribal sentiments.
