The supposed tradition that took place at Ozoro Community in the Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria, is beyond moral decay, it is total collapse of society, to the extent you began to question the sustainability of such tradition, such tradition has no place in this modern era, to what value should the culture even celebrated? To belittle women? Or make mockery of women? In such certain you began to have a proper view of how women are placed in such society.
This is pure barbarism, the ideal that someone actually thought about this festival, organized it and created an atmosphere where women are allowed to be sexually abused, shows high level of decadence in the society. The culture, traditions and the people are core settings of the society, in all people choose culture and traditions to honour their existence, but where culture dehumanizes people, it should be totally obliterated.
Social media has created chaos in different levels, it could be in a positive or negative way, the videos that were circulating online showing where women are sexually harassed, you can see the that the person videoing made no effort to stop the perpetrators of such crime, rather the whole energy was channeled into videoing it and possibly post online, in this modern day Social media algorithm, people have become increasingly obsessed with clickbait, they just want to have contents on the internet.
It was gathered according to Premium Times that organizer of the festival, Sunday Omorede, who is also local chief in that community has been arrested. It goes beyond arrest, the question would be, will justice take its course at the end of everything? No one is certain of that, Nigerians trust in judicial system and police force is in negative, leaving the victims of this crime with their hope hang in a thin line over the possibility of justice.
In a month of celebrating the impact of women in the society, and the need to draw some sort of gender roles considering the gender based violence, and other handicapped experienced by women, which limit their wind to fly, it is self evident that no progress has actually been made in that regard, if women are still treated like this in modern era, it shows the progress is at snail speed if at all there is any progress at all.
