Social media remains one of the most powerful tool to connect everyone, in what started in Nepal as social media movement against luxurious lifestyle of “Nepo Kids” has turned to the most proactive movement the country has witnessed in recent years, it has sent a shocking wave not only in Nepal, but across the world. Prior before the unrest, they were proposed meeting with the Gen-Z movement, the army and the president, the unrest continued as possible means to salvage the situation becomes slim, the parliament and the Supreme Court, key symbols of the state, were set ablaze.
Sparked by economic inequality in the country, with grown number of unemployment age bracket of 15-24 grew by 20.8% in 2024, what actually pour salt in the wound, was, despite the economic hardship, politicians’ children were seen posting their designer bags and expensive trip, while greater percentage of the country’s population struggle to put food rrr7on the table. There are long bridge separating the country’s elite and the masses, lack of economic opportunities, emerging youth population struggle to put their lives together, as hope for desired lives feel almost unreachable, forcing the young population moving abroad in search of greener pastures.

An efforts were made to crackdown on the protesters, which saw users on social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp banned by the government. On Monday, thousands of protesters were gathered at Maitighar Mandala- a monument in the heart of Kathmandu near federal parliament building, the protest began to gain momentum as protesters grow in numbers matching towards the government building, clashing with police and climbing the gates. It was reported by Nepal authorities that 19 people were killed in that social unrest and hundreds were wounded.
The movement led to the ousting of the Prime Minister, several government officials resigned in the wake of the protest, which raised a lot of eyebrows. As the protest began to gain momentum it transcended beyond only Gen-Z orchestrated movement, people of different ages defied curfew and come out to protest against the corruption, lavish lifestyle of politicians’ kids, accountability was demanded, unfortunately the protest metamorphosed to bloody one, excessive force were used against them, which resulted to casualties, government buildings were in flames.
Similar incident happened in Bangladesh, now in Nepal, the bottom line is, it can happen anywhere, especially government that has neglected their core functions and duties, focused in rooting the treasury, their children showing expensive lifestyle while masses are in agony with limited opportunity to put themselves on the track. Sending their children to study overseas, reluctant in upgrading school systems and infrastructure in their own country, students studying in worst environment, overburdening poor masses with tax, chasing out small businesses out of competitive market through government unhealthy policies.
