Mmeso Inspires: What We Seek

What you seek, seeks you Ola

Verily, many seasons have I witnessed

But I cannot explain what you seeks in the dark under the mango tree with Odefo, a man old enough to be your father.

I thought you’ve grown to be a woman?

I thought you are the daughter of my youth, the very child who had passed through my loins…

I am disappointed Ola.

After the death of your father, you promised to make me a proud widow.

You promised to wipe the tears of my cheeks Ola…

Now tell me, are these the promises?

Fumbling in the dark with Odefo today and

Moving into Aturu’s hut the next day…

What have your poor mother done to deserve all these pains?

I am disappointed Ola.

Though my husband, your father, left us with nothing when he died, but…

I provided you with everything to make life comfortable for you…

You lacked nothing Ola, but why have you chosen to drag me to the mud.

Why?

Why, have you chosen to make me a laughing stock in the village?

I taught you that a woman must know no man, until her marriage.

But what is that limping all about?

Right before my eyes, you’ve been defiled…

Did I have to say…”defiled”, when you have consented to your own defilement.

I am not going to report to the king what had happened?

Neither am I going to summon your uncles so that we can put heads together and penalize Odefo.

You know… he who has gathered an ant-infested firewood should be ready to welcome lizards to his house for a feast.

I am disappointed Ola.

There is time, I must say, to retrace your steps, or else you will weep at dusk.

There is still time to be the little girl I used to know…

Though you have soiled your name, but there is still time to rise up from the mud and dust your self.

You are my only child, and I will always be there for you….

Do away with those shameless behavior Ola…

Because what you flee from, flees from you.
