Mmeso Inspires: The Test

Tears rolled down my cheeks,

Huddled to a corner was mother,

Probably tired from crying.

I turned to Obed but he looked away,

I wept harder.

Few hours later, Issac enters.

He moved closer to me and I noticed the pain in his eyes,

“Naomi, don’t tell me It’s true?

“Sandra just told me you were diagnosed of cancer and your chances of living are slim. What happened?

It was heavy as well as painful to speak,

So I nodded as tears poured down my cheeks.

I waited earnestly for Romeo,

The absolute love of my life to turn up,

Sarah my younger sister kept dialing his number,

But he refused to pick up.

Two days later, he asked his people to return the bride price he paid on my head.

I was still lying hopeless in the hospital when Sarah broke the news to me,

Mother had clearly hid it from me,

I wept bitterly.

Obed stopped coming too,

I smiled at the thought of how things can change in a second,

The same young man that slept outside the house in a bid to get my attention,

What about Romeo who paid my dowry few days ago before the incident happened,

Whose love had carried me from the sky to the ground,

What happened?

I had neglected Issac,

He was the first that professed love to me,

But I hated him at first sight,

Infact he disgusts me.

Poor Issac!

A promising young fellow,

But I hate the fact that he was not educated,

I wonder why?

What on earth will he do with a cancer patient like me?

He never cease coming

Since I was admitted in the hospital,

Maybe he believe that miracle will happen,

I began to suspect Sarah told him something,

Because he was her favourite of all my suitors,

But she swore to me that she didn’t.

Issac passed the test for real.

Yes, you are surprised right?

It was a test suggested by my grandfather,

Because I was the only child,

And my suitors were all “good” as mother said,

Now, I truly found,

My life partner.

It was all a make believe,

To find the right one,

And it worked.

It was carefully planned,

To avoid mistakes.

And you can see I acted well.

Romeo said it was injustice in his part,

Obed said it was so foolish of me to do so,

While Issac said it was a good one,

I smiled.

My husband has passed the test,

My true happiness,

My Thick and thin,

When I looked at Issac for the twentieth time,

I knew I will love him forever.
