I was in my room the other day,
Hungry and thinking of what to eat,
First it was the cockroach which sent me scampering towards the door for safety,
Then I remember my lock was faulty,
I gave out a bawl.
I was expecting to see, Dan.
The young man living next door,
But Peggy entered,
Pushing the door wide open with such a great force.
I grit my teeth in annoyance.
What am I supposed to do with such a loquacious fellow?
She sat on my bed, smiling,
I breath a sign of relief,
The cockroach must have entered her cloth,
Serves her right!
“Rat? she asked laughing.
“Yes. But it has scampered away”, I lied.
How will I explain to my neighbours that cockroach is threatening me in my own room.
Is Dan around? I asked.

She looked at me but did not utter a word,
I was surprised.
This is the girl who gossip with everyone in the compound.
“Is this not a good topic for gossip? I thought.
“Nnenne! she called.
“Nowadays men are not moved by what they see,
They are getting wiser everyday,
I think you should stop disturbing the neighbourhood with your scream because Dan cannot be moved by them,
Yesterday it was spider, today it is cockroach, tomorrow it will be a rat,
Come on,
You think you are the only beautiful girl in this compound,
Stop disturbing us with your senseless scream.
“Get out of my room, you fool! I shouted.
She stood up and walk out of my room laughing and clapping her hands in an annoying way,
I knew she will them,
I thought of strangling myself,
Has Peggy been spying on me!
I carefully allowed my gentle friend “Cockroach” slid down my leg.
When I turned around,
I met Peggy eyes,
I was right,
She was peeping from my window,
Now I know today,
That she is not a gossiper but a spy.
I felt bad,
My tactics has failed me.
