Mmeso Inspires: The Pretence

He shook his head and bit his lips. His face contorted with pain.

“I’m not interested in this relationship anymore”, she said again, clearing her throat.

He winced in pain. He rolled his wheelchair forward but she hissed and stepped back.

“Janet, are you seriously breaking up with me?

She shrugged.

“You will do the same, if you were in my shoes, Bernard. Who will want to date a crippled man like you?

“I guess you are right, Janet. But you promised to love me forever. If you leave me in this condition, who will take me in?

“How can I present you to my people, Bernard? They will all mock me.

“After everything I have done for you and your family, Janet. I was involved in an accident and you couldn’t even come to the hospital to see me”.

“It is so wicked of you to ask me to marry you in this condition, Bernard.  How can I spend my bright future with a man confined to a wheelchair. What about the good life you promised me. What about that, Bernard?

“Janet, I’m really sorry things turned out this way but it is none of our fault. Please, my friends will laugh at me if you leave me. The doctor said there are chances that I will walk again. Let’s be hopeful, my love.”

“No! Janet said, shrugging.

Bernard tried holding her but she pushed his hand away.

“I love you so much, Janet. Please don’t do this to me”.

“I’m sorry, I will disappoint you, Bernard. She said and walk towards the exit door. Bernard pulled her back. She froze as she watched him stand up.

“I thought as much”, Bernard said smiling.

“You fooled me”, Janet gasped.

“The same way you fooled me into thinking that you love me. Come on, Janet. I’m smarter than you are. I heard how you were moving around the town with my friend Leonard as soon you heard that I was involved in an accident”.

“You played a prank on me, baby…

“Oh. Stop the pretence, Janet. You never loved me, you were only after the money. What have I done to deserve such from you?

“I’m sorry, Bernard. It is the devil”, she pleaded.

Just then a pretty lady walked in. She hugged and kissed Bernard.

“You devil! Janet growled. The lady ignored her while flaunting her engagement ring.

“It is too late, Janet. I met an angel already. You broke my heart but someone else came to amend it. I wish you all the best”, Bernard said quietly while kicking away his wheelchair. Without speaking a word, Janet stormed out of the house, crying.
