Mmeso Inspires: The Phone Call

I was awake, wide awake in the middle of the night.

I glanced at the clock, it was few minutes past twelve…

Yet, I was awake thinking of how I will make a mark in the world.

I was born and raised in the slum, but I won’t die in it…

It is a decision.

My phone rings again, I decide to answer the call.

It was David, my elder brother.

“How are you doing little bro, he asked”.

“Fine, Biggie I answered, you?

“Fine too… he answered, but I noticed the strain in his voice.

“It is tough here Biggie, I feel like giving up right away”, I answered.

“Not too soon Kiddo, what happens to our dreams? Our family hope on us, remember, he said to me.

“Life is too hard Biggie, I answered as I burst into tears.

He hung up but called me back immediately.

“Listen Kiddo, you don’t have to give up.

“Mother is down with illness, father is blind and our siblings dropped out of school a long time ago.

“Remember our visions Little Bro, we need to be strong and face life.

“Since I left home in search of greener pastures, I have been homeless.

Life has been cruel, but I was crueler.

“Most times, the big boys in the street snatch my earnings for the day or even for a week, but I keep on moving because of our dreams kiddo”.

I noticed he was crying… I felt bad.

”Listen kiddo, I won’t let you down, I promise. I won’t let our family down. Be strong, so that we can do this…

“You remember that quote you told me about the other day… “Most times, when we find ourselves in a dark place, we think we have been buried, but actually we have been planted.

“We have been planted Bro, please don’t give up, I cannot do this alone.

“I have to go now Kiddo… he said hurriedly.

“I may not really be calling consistently now… he said, heaving.

“Biggie, Why? I asked surprised, suppressing my tears.

“They took my phone Kiddo, I am sorry, I couldn’t defend my self, but I promise to be stronger.

“A friend gave me his phone to call… he said.

“I love you Bro, send my regards to others he said and hung up.

I cried harder…

“I promise to be strong Biggie, I said to myself.
