Mmeso Inspires: The Orison

She placed her hands on my head and prayed for me…

It was fervent, because I could feel the vibration of her hands and the tremor in her voice.

She prayed for prosperity…

She prayed for longevity and happiness.

She prayed for wealth and affluence.

Then she lift up her eyes, tears forming a mass in her wrinkled eyes…

Then she prayed for a good man.

She held my hands, letting out the words slowly…

“You will marry a good man, he will love you…

He will never hurt you, he will pamper you…

He will never cheat on you, he will sacrifice a lot for you…” she continued, her lips making a kind of movement.

It was like an incantation, but I knew it comes from within, a place of deep.

Because only the deep can call unto the deep.

She cried as she says this prayer, tightening her grip on my hands.

This was the prayer of a septuagenarian, I guess.

But she look and lived as if she is ten decade old.

An old woman who people thought was a witch and

would not associate with her.

I kept her prayer in mind, without knowing what prompted the lines…

During my leisure times, I always cook and clean her house.

I hid it from my parents and from my friends or they will stop me…

Verily, what I feel in my heart was pity, absolute compassion because she live alone in that lonely hut.

Who is she?

I never knew.

Two years later, I relocated and met my husband…

He was more than I ever wanted in a man, I knew her prayers worked because I have always been in a bad and abusive relationships.

I went to her hut to see her with my husband having been away for a long time, but we were told when we got there, that she had joined her ancestors.

I wept.

I felt I betrayed her.

Though my travelling to the city was impromptu, I felt I should have told her about it.

I was devastated.

Three days later, I found out what prompted her prayers.

She had a husband who always beat her, cheat on her, and speaks ill of her to his friends and to others who cared to listen to him.

Yes, she had a husband who was impotent and hid it from her until it was late.

She had a husband who brings women to their matrimonial room and ask her to close the door behind.

But she stay with him still, hoping for a change..

Alas, it never happened.

She had a husband who left the house and never return.

Now, I knew why her prayers were raw and served the purpose for which it was said…

The orison of a wounded woman.
