Mmeso Inspires: The Betrayal

There was silence. It was such that one could clearly hear the sound of a pin that fell on the ground.

Dofo cleared her throat.

“Why must it be Iyanga? she queried

“Because she is the weakest of us all”, Enyo hastily answered.

“We can’t betray her. Remember, she sacrificed everything she had for the spirit of our brotherhood”, Dofo insisted.

“That is our final decision, Dofo. Iyanya did what she had to do. She has no other choice anyway. Besides our next action demands both bravery and finances or else we will not be successful. We sell her off to equip ourselves. That is final!

Eso said. She sounded as if she was the leader of the squad but she wasn’t.

Ire the leader of the squad, was seated at a corner. She knew Dofo was saying the truth but greed had blinded her into making the decision.

“This is injustice! Dofo Insisted. Turning to Ire where she was seated like a statute. She queried.

“Leader, you are not saying anything?

“Dofo, you know the rules of the brotherhood. We cannot allow sentiment to ruin the law”, she quickly answered avoiding Dofo’s gaze.

Enyo cleared her throat and looked around before speaking.

“Woe betide anyone who tries to distort our plans by telling Iyanga, because the culprit will pay dearly for her crimes”.

Dofo shift uneasily on her seat. She has made up her mind to do so. But she must be careful with her approach.

“What have I done wrong? Iyanya asked as tears gathered in her eyes.

“You must be strong, Iyanga”, Dofo said softly.

“What will I do?

“I think you should leave this village Iyanga. It is not safe for you. According to the plan, we will come and take you away in the early hours of morning…

Iyanga couldn’t control her tears.

“After the sacrifices, loyalty and support that I pledged to the brotherhood. They decided to betray me. Dofo, is it fair? she asked, sobbing.

“I have to go, Iyanga. I think Eso and some of the girls are stalking me since I opposed their schemes. I have to start going before they noticed my absence”.

Iyanya nodded, wiped her tears and hugged her.

“Thank you, Dofo. May the gods of our land keep you”.

Dofo smiled, pat her back and quickly left through the backyard.

“She was in my house today”, Iyanga said. Her eyes flashing with delight.

“Good! the plan is working”, Eso said while Ire sharpens her tools.

“I will go to her place and inform her that I am leaving before midnight. She will probably offer to see me off the border that leads to Awuwa stream. There and then, we can capture her”, Iyanga said.

“Play smart, Iyanga”, Ire cautioned.

“She was not suspecting anything at all. I played well and she fell for my deceits”, Iyanga said.

“Suit her well! Dofo can not be stronger than the brotherhood”, Eso said.

Outside the tiny hut of Ayawudu and in the late hour of night, Dofo was quietly listening to their conversation. She hid herself under the shrubs to avoid being caught.

She shook her head in disappointment and quietly walk away, far away from the village of Bale.

“I will return for all of you”, she said to herself in a whisper.

As she stepped into the village of Efilo, a cock crowed signaling the beginning of a new dawn.

A new dawn for the world and for Dofo.
