Mmeso Inspires: That Time Of The Night

And it was that time of the night, when wives’ cuddle up with their husband…

When small children are scared to go outside alone to pee.

And Mama’s scary folktales gives me the nightmares, that I choose to urinate on my bamboo bed instead of using the latrine.

I pray Papa finds out not, or else I will cultivate his farmland.

Work which I hate so much with not just my heart but my soul.

Ugbene and his wife had started again.

It was that time of the night when couples are locked up in their nuptial obligation…

And kids grumble for eating a meatless soup

While concluding to be like Jidenna…

The young man who cooks yam with butter and lives in a well furnished bungalow close to the village square.

No one knows what he does but I have caught him several times staring foolishly at my sister Ugomma each time she passes by, swinging her hips from side to side.

Yes, it was that time of night when the pestle of Nkoli’s late cooking revibrate the whole village.

Making men to curse under their breath…

Then comes Ugbene, her husband, shouting on top of his voice and raining curses on her.

“You won’t kill me before my time, you useless woman, instead I will kill you with my bare hands”…

“Why are you cooking for me by this time of the night, are you mad? Or did you think I am a spirit that eats at midnight? He thundered.

“Ugbene, she fired back… “I don’t know why you are making noise for a meal which you will not taste, this food won’t cross your face…

Go back to that bar, and drink your self to stupor, since that’s what you’ve always wanted, see how he stinks! Goat!!! She screamed.

Ugbene pounced on her and beat her mercilessly… she cries with her children.

It was that time of the night when Ugomma speak in low tones with Mama.

I knew it was because of Jidenna coming to our house during the day…. to ask for my sister’s hand in marriage.

Ugomma had hissed and left the place, leaving both Mama, Papa and the young man stupefied.

I don’t know what Mama said to Ugomma thereafter….

But I knew she accepted him afterwards…

I pray they don’t end up like Ugbene and his wife.
