Mmeso Inspires: Rape: A Societal Evil

Rape reports have been in the news for some days now. It is always a trending topic because the act is not just a societal evil but portrays the inhumane nature of the perpetrators of the act.

Few years back, we were awakened by the news of Uwaila Vera Omozuwa, a 22-year-Old student who was not just raped but murdered in cold blood where she had gone to study. The question remains, Is it a crime to be a woman?

Though some of her persecutors were fished out and bought to book, did it justify the fact that the life of a young beautiful woman who was filled with dreams and aspirations ended before it even started?

Meanwhile, the case of Vera was one out of the many thousand horrifying rape cases that made it to the internet.  What about cases where the victims are silenced? What about situations where the victims don’t even have the means to seek justice? What about cases where the victims couldn’t make it to tell the world their story? Most importantly, what about the victims that the justice system has failed?

Some persons are of the opinion that the victims of rape make themselves susceptible to the act by not dressing properly. What can you say about the case of a 6 month old baby or 2 years old girl child who was either molested by a neighbour, a trusted uncle or even her own father? Are they Improperly dressed too?

What can we also say about the case of Ochanya Ogbanje, a little girl who has a bright future but was not allowed to live it. What happened? She was abused to death. From the age of seven, the innocent little girl was sexually abused continuously by her guardian who was supposed to be a father figure to her.

It is more painful that this act continued for years while she wallow in pain and agony until the abuse destroyed her health. On October 17, 2018, she died at the age of 13 of complications resulting from Vesico-Vaginal Fistula (VVF), a condition that causes the bladder to bypass the urethra in the vagina.

According to reports, the doctor said her condition was due to prolonged sexual abuse through her anus and vagina. To complicate the while issue, the culprits of this heinous act allegedly go about their normal business. What a tragedy and Irony of life!

The question remains… Is it a crime to be a girl child?

This is a clarion call for everyone to stand up and fight against this societal decay, weak justice system and negligence of the girl child.

What happened to Ochanya can happen to anybody and that’s why all hands must be on deck to make sure that this social evil is totally eradicated from the society and country at large. Parents should know that a girl child is fragile and must not be sent everywhere or to live with anybody.

We must all stand up, fight and demand justice for all the victims of rape who were silenced, killed or isolated into oblivion. The movement begins now, with YOU and I.
