Mmeso Inspires: Heedless Fly

It was already midnight before Mmaya accepted we had lost our way.

Ojiugo glared at her like a mad hyena. My heart skipped a beat. I remember my mother’s dream.

“Why are you so foolish? Hotie thundered. No one probably knows, not even Chief Umezulike that Hotie actually have a beautiful name…”Obiageli”.

Mmaya remained taciturn. Probably she took the wrong road on purpose. My mouth went dry and for seconds I couldn’t feel my tongue.

“Let’s check in at the nearest hotel”, I suggested.

“I don’t have any money with me”, Hotie quickly answered

I shook my head. I saw Chief handling some bundles of money to her few minutes ago. Why is she denying it? I thought.

You said you’ve been here before, why are you not familiar with the route again? Ojiugo asked, shouting.

I shrugged.

I took out my phone from my bag and fumbled for the map. Then it suddenly occurred to me that I don’t know my way about it. The burning sensation in my throat continued and I feel giddy.

The drink that Hotie encouraged me to take before meeting with the new man he introduced to me has started taking a toll on me.

Immediately some group of men emerged from the nearby bush and walked briskly towards us, fully armed.

That was when I was about to ask the question “What exactly are we doing here?

The reaction of my colleagues made it easier for me to understand that probably I have been set up.

In a flash it happened. And mother’s shaky voice twenty three hours ago replayed again in my mind.

“I was in the dream… You went out with some group of girls…” Goosebumps filled my body and as the men whisked me away into the bush, I knew I had failed the woman who trade under the rain  and scorching sun to train me in school. I was barely conscious.

I overheard Hotie telling them I was healthy and neat. Now I knew they all acted their scripts well. Everything was planned and just like the proverbial heedless fly… I had followed the corpse to the grave.

TO BE CONTINUED.
