MMESO INSPIRES

Mmeso Inspires: Act in the Night

It was that time of the night when the moon appears full,

And the weather, quite chilly,

But we would rather make up a bonfire,

Rather than miss this moment.

We would rather endure the unfriendly weather,

Than miss the sight of that special one that makes our heart beat faster.

It was that time of the night when young men express their love to their women,

In rhythmical pattern,

Making promises that will hardly be fulfilled,

Except on rare occasions, where the young woman has a good “chi”,

That moment Ogechi sneak out of the house to meet her lover under the mango tree,

But was accompanied by her mother’s ranting,

She had left the house without preparing dinner,

What a mistake!

It was that same time, that I met the roving eyes of Onochie,

The only young man that was educated in our village,

At first, I thought he was admiring my new beads,

Until I noticed the fire in his eyes,

I began to move around so that he could catch a full glimpse,

Shaking my waist provocatively,

It worked.

He came lurking after me shortly after,

I have to play my cards well,

They said he is tough,

Look girl, I’m tougher to get,

I don’t know how it happened,

But it happened too fast,

We fell in love at first sight,

Toughness abandoned.

I don’t know whose fault it is,

Whether it was my own uncalculated actions or,

The weather’s,  which is the best for newly married couple,

I don’t know if it was that of Onochie, who came fumbling for my waist beads in an intoxicated manner,

Ripping them off in frenzy maybe like an Impala,

Maybe I should blame the drummers for leaving us hypnotized with their skills even as we go down the act in the darkest part of the arena,

Just like Ere, I will blame the night for concealing such act.

What a mistake!

Before I could realize myself, the deed was done,

I knew he was smarter now,

He left without a word, a look of triumph spread all over his face,

I suppressed the urge to smash his head from the back,

I was terribly ashamed of myself,

Thirty minutes ago, I was parading my self all over the arena,

I thought the world revolves around me,

Maybe it was a subtle way to bruise my ego and humble me,

I burst into tears.

What a mistake!

I thought of how to face my mother’s inquisitive eyes,

Trekking back home in the solitude of my own thought,

I noticed someone was moving behind me,

I turned back,

Onochie was moving with Asamma, my best friend,

They were holding hands and laughing probably to draw my attention,

I ignored them,

I cannot easily be defeated.

I shall strike back,

like a wounded viper.
