Has Marriage as an Institution gone on a Survival Mode

The culture has continued to change for the new generation putting the concept of marriage on survival mode. The rudiments of marriage is to commit to each other, compatibility and to live happily ever after. The process starts with dating and gradually snowballed into something serious leading to marriage. It feels like the whole idea and foundation has changed with Gen Z, they want to be flexible with anything even institution of marriage, they want to maintain personal spaces and set limits in marriages, which often negatives marriage as an institution of two persons who work together as a team, disregarding the basis of this institution and there by putting it on survival mode.

Traditionally after tertiary education what comes to the mind is to settle with partner in marriage. The greatest threat now to institution of marriage is lack of exclusivity, most marriages don’t enjoy that, one party has tendency to tell someone of every single thing that goes in their marriage, which often leave the marriage leaking in a very negative way. As opposed to mechanised way of couples handling their affairs. The new concept of marriages almost leave it as an open marriage,  where partners are free to do whatever. The Gen z find it easy to reneged from their commitment and come to social media to badmouth whatever experience that is not in line with their expectations.

The concept of marriage as a strong institution of two persons who have promised to build and support the growth of the relationship has gone into extinction, new generation are prioritizing individual happiness whatever that means as opposed to collective happiness, self-care and freedom to live at their wish and time. That’s why most marriages are standing on gunpowder, the institution has been desecrated as some people are starting to disregard it and likened it as against individual freedom and prioritize group relationships where likeminds encouraged one another to disregard marriage.

The willingness of people to go into marriage has seriously dropped, this is  because the traditional concept in which it is built feels like that they are at variance with new adopted approach. People who are not moved with such approach are painstakingly looking for partners of likeminds, that share the same ideas and similar approach to life with. Relationships have now been expensive, in such depressing economy some people are in relationships as a mode of survival, and that is not a good parameter for measuring the level of commitment one desires. The ideal of marriage come with substantial level of attainment, keeping your economy aloft, to set goals that are complementary to your future plans.

As oppose to traditionally conceived process leading to union of two people, the Gen z can decide to hang around with someone whose connection is not clearly defined, they are not relationship, no talks leading to marriage and they term is friends with benefits. In such time where everyone talks about their mental health, emotional wellbeing and financial freedom, the conception is that marriage impedes such attainment. Single parenting is now becoming rife, and people feel this is where their hearts are at, as they can prioritize themselves without necessarily minding whether anyone is hurt.
